Staying steady this season: Fall prevention tips for the holidays

Posted

The holiday season is a time for celebration and family gatherings, but it can also bring hidden hazards for your balance.  At FYZICAL Fairless Hills, we see many patients who experience slips and falls at this time of year. The good news is most falls are preventable with a few simple strategies and attention to balance and strength.

Watch Your Step Outdoors:

  • Wear shoes with good traction and avoid smooth soles.
  • "Walk like a penguin” on frozen ground with short, shuffling steps.
  • Always use handrails.

Decorate Safely:

  • Always have someone hold the ladder steady.
  • Avoid overreaching and move closer to your work instead.
  • Keep walkways free of extension cords and decorations.

Stay Active:

  • Avoid reduced muscle strength and balance by doing indoor exercises, or a short daily walk.
  • Simple balance exercises like standing on one foot or gentle heel-to-toe walks.

Plan for Gatherings:

  • Bring assistive devices (like a cane) if you normally use one.
  • Ask for help carrying items, especially on stairs.
  • Avoid multitasking while walking, hold the handrail instead of food or drinks.

Know When to Get Your Balance Checked

If you’ve noticed feeling dizzy or lightheaded, needing to hold onto furniture when walking, or having a fear of falling, it might be time for a balance assessment. Our physical therapy team can evaluate your strength, coordination, and vestibular (inner ear) system to create a personalized plan to help you stay steady this season and all year long.

Give yourself the Gift of Stability

This holiday season, give yourself the gift of safety and confidence. If you or someone you know could benefit from a balance assessment, contact FYZICAL Fairless Hills at 267-874-6000 or learn more at www.fyzical.com/fairless-hills-pa and take the first step towards a healthier, stronger you.
